Today I wrote a letter to the families at Bethlehem Lutheran Church – Twin Cities, who attend the Minneapolis campus. While we can’t meet the needs of every family, I think we do a good job on providing opportunities for kids in worship. Below is what I wrote:
What Makes Bethlehem Special for Kids – Minneapolis Campus
After 25 years of ministry with children, I can say this with confidence: worship is the heart of Christian formation. It’s where kids don’t just learn about God—they experience God. While Sunday School, Choir, and Bible Study all matter – nothing shapes faith more deeply than worship. Here is how we have shaped worship to be different then other places:
ECHO Sunday School: Worshiping with kids is challenging—and sacred. That’s why we use an ECHO model: kids begin in worship, join in storytime, and then head to their own space during the sermon for songs, prayer, and learning. They return for Holy Communion—fully part of the faith community.
One parent said, “I love ECHO because my kids are in worship with me singing and praying and communing, but they also have their own time with friends to learn about God.”
Little Liturgists: Bethlehem is one of few churches where kids can help lead worship—reading scripture, bringing offerings, ushering, playing music, even serving Communion. We believe kids can do big things—and they love to be part of something meaningful.
Another parent said, “My daughter loves to be a reader on Sunday mornings!”
Known by Name: Research shows that kids are more likely to have lasting faith when they’re known by their church community—not just their peers. At Bethlehem, we foster this through prayer partners, Lenten mentors, coffee-hour connections, and more. Your kids will be known and loved here.
And yet another parent, “My summer prayer partner still checks in with my family over coffee and donuts.”
Storytime: Storytime at Bethlehem is unexpected and unforgettable. We use movement, repetition, creativity, and play to bring God’s story to life—for kids and grown-ups alike.
An Usher mentioned, “Pastor Heather, are you planning to do anything special for storytime we need to know about?”
Spaces That Welcome: We’ve designed worship spaces that work for real families:
- Prayer Ground in the back of the sanctuary
- A Adjacent Room with streaming the service, small tables, coloring, and quiet toys
- A legroom section in the front of the sanctuary for little movers
- A staffed nursery when needed
- And coming soon: Toddler Rows for sanctuary seating
A New Member said, “I could tell my family mattered as soon as I walked in. We were greeted right away, there were other families in the pews, even a prayer ground for little ones!” – New Member
If you’ve read this far, thank you. Every church has its unique way of being Christ’s body in the world. I just wanted you to know what makes this one—your church—so special for kids.
Any questions? Just ask.
